Home Away from Home

by Matt on October 19, 2015

WHAT A GROUP OF PEOPLE. Before I clarify what I mean by that I have to explain that I moved from Des Moines, Iowa to Charlotte, North Carolina in March of this year. When you move halfway across the country you don’t really understand the small occurrences you may miss in life. Like now I miss those sill nights I went to play “put makeup on Uncle Matt” with my five-year-old niece Ellie. Since I’ve arrived in Charlotte, I’ve spent so much time meeting new people and building some great relationships a lot over the 8 months, but you’re always searching for something that feels like home.

Then the 2015 Savannah User Conference happened. WHAT A GROUP OF PEOPLE and I mean everyone from my co-workers to the clients!

I have to start with the group of folks that really made it happen and care about each other, my fellow co-workers. When it was time to get something done everyone pitched in a hand, but everyone had smiles while helping one another out. It was really something different than anything I’ve been a part of. The cooperation and comradery was a nice feeling. It was a touch of home that I had been missing.

Next, I have to give massive credit to such an upbeat fun group of clients.  It didn’t matter that we had just met or it wasn’t my territory. It felt like we had known one another for years. I felt like I had 6 moms when I left on that Wednesday. One group I consider moms in particular (brought me homemade lemon balls on the second day of our conference) can shed some light on how I felt; and embodied the type of people that I was able to spend time with and fell at home with. It’s that nameless un-explainable feeling you get when you walk into home for the first time in a while.

Well, I can’t say it’s quite as fun as getting makeup jammed in my face by a five-year-old, but it still means a lot. People may take for granted that feeling, but it wasn’t until I moved did I realize what that feeling was. So thank you everyone who was there at the Conference co-workers and clients. You really are a great group of people I like to think of as an extended part of my family.
