Obstructions

by Cindy on May 6, 2015

Obstructions!  How do we deal with them at work or life in general?  Do we go around them? Do we ignore them? Do we move them or are they moveable? Do we give up and not do anything at all?

In Land Surveying we deal with obstructions on every project.  So, how do we deal with obstructions?  We need to make sure we are equipped with the right tools, that we have the mentality to deal with change, and that we are empowered to make decisions on the fly. Therefore, what kind of obstructions do we run into?

On a construction site we have to work around earth moving equipment, cranes, people, and vehicles.  We have to watch for safety issues, making sure the field crew stays out of harms way, protect the equipment, and make sure we are getting the job done timely and efficiently.  Our crews are equipped with many tools that can help with these obstructions and help them become visible to other people working on site.

Working near the roadway is very dangerous. There can be obstructions along the roadway, in the roadway, and on the roadway that can all can hinder the line of site.  This type of work is not typically done as a one man surveying crew due to safety issues.  A second and sometimes a third person is needed to help everyone stay safe and work around obstructions.

Working in a building, we find shelving, walls, columns, and even people working.  We will use 3D Laser Scanning to help work around these obstructions.  Using a 3D laser scanner, we can collect a lot of data in a short amount of time; and we can use devices like an elevator tripod to elevate the scanner over the shelving and desks. This equipment won’t hinder people working in the area.  It is unobtrusive and most people wouldn’t even know it is there.

Every day we all encounter obstructions.  How we deal with them reflects who we are. And when working with a client, it also reflects who we are as a company.
