Making your Genealogy Search Easier with Beacon

by Ryan on May 26, 2015

In another version of Beacon™ enhancements, I will briefly describe our Cemetery Search module. I am addicted to genealogy and historical research. At family reunions I would also listen to stories of my ancestors from older relatives and always wanted to know more.  Fast forwarding a few years, the internet has made our world much smaller and also provided platforms for specific research with genealogy. Beacon™, with its ability to connect to various databases, has worked with local organizations to connect to this data.

Kosciusko County, Indiana has worked with their local historical society and foundations to make their cemetery data easily accessible. Here is a link to the page: Kosciusko County Cemetery Search.

The database is made with simple search features for name, birth year, death year, or cemetery name.  After a search is started, the results are displayed in a simple tabular format with hyperlinks that have detailed information. Upon clicking on the hyperlink, a large image and map with specific location is accessible. I have found this site to be very useful for locating older gravestones or finding a family plot.

In other examples, Beacon™ displays cemetery locations as a simple polygon or point feature. With Beacon’s New Design, bringing your tablet or phone with you as you search cemetery plots is much cleaner user experience than ever before. With Beacon™, you can also find a GPS tool that finds your exact location and will zoom you to the specific property that are standing near. As research technology tools improve to make genealogy easier, Beacon™ will continue to stay in pace with the most available advanced options.
