Mobile Technology - Don't be Left Behind

by Kevin G. on May 5, 2014

Have you ever had the feeling that the world has left you behind? Just the other day, I was working on my laptop when my 15 year old daughter walked into the room. She said, “Wow, you still have a laptop!”  Apparently, to a 15 year old, laptops are a bit archaic.

What are we to do?  The way we do things now seems to work. We are comfortable with our systems. Do we really need to change? The simple answer is yes. But how?

We must face reality. It is no longer about what we want, or what we are comfortable with. We need to look at the next generation and adapt accordingly.  If we don’t, we will soon be left behind. I have 2 teenagers (ugh!), and if the information is not mobile accessible, then they won’t bother with it.

This topic came up at a break-out session at a conference.  I was fortunate enough to be on a panel with several other GIS experts before a room of county surveyors.  The session started with the simple question posed to the panel of “Where is GIS heading?”  While the members of the panel represented 3 different GIS firms with 3 different philosophies; we all agreed that mobility is where GIS is trending.

Just as with all new technology, there are many ways to achieve the end goal, which in this case is mobility. Schneider Geospatial believes the best way to achieve this is through the systems our clients are already using. For this reason, we have developed modules in our award winning Beacon™ solution that allows assessors to take Beacon™ into the field on a tablet or smartphone and take notes right in Beacon™. We are helping highway departments across the state by capturing their updated assets; including: signs, culverts, and roads, right in Beacon™.

Since our conception, Schneider Geospatial’s success has been derived on innovation. When our clients needed to transition from paper to digital, we did it with GIS. When they needed to access the data easier, we developed a web portal (Beacon™). Recently our customers needed a workflow management tool that was cloud-based (Permitting™). One of our latest advancements in technology has been making our cloud-based solutions mobile.  Both Beacon™ and Permitting™ allow the user to access and modify data through a tablet, a smart phone, or even an antiquated laptop!
