Quality Relationships

by John on June 9, 2015

Throughout my adult life one of the things I have consistently found to be a very important aspect of life in general is building quality relationships. Of course, we all know how important family is and just how nice it is to have good friends that we enjoy spending time with; but building great relationships in your professional life can also be very rewarding. Over the past 17 years I have tried to focus much more on great relationships with my clients, prospective clients, and industry peers.

Last year, my wife Sherrill and I visited Hawaii for the first time, hitting the Big Island, Maui, and Kauai, spending a week on each island. Our visit to Maui was particularly rewarding because of the wonderful time visiting with a qPublic.net™ client and his family. This client invited us to his home for a Sunday afternoon cookout. We were very pleasantly surprised at the crowd of locals, friends, and family that he also invited. One of his good friends gave us each a local grown pineapple, a sign of “welcome”.

Although we were far away, in a beautiful, tropical, Polynesian paradise, this cookout was incredibly “American”: Football on the big TV in the 4 car garage while grilling out and all the kids played ball in the front yard. This group of friends made us feel very welcome indeed! One of the families brought a chameleon (lizard) which they found on a tree in their yard, and which was, at least temporarily, the family pet. That’s a very slow moving lizard – kind of like the sloth of the lizard world.

Later in my week on Maui, I was able to visit our client’s office and meet many of his co-workers for the first time, and even visit with the Maui Civil Defense Agency and discuss our damage assessment product IDAM™, which they bought. I also had the good luck to attend the very first meeting of the newly formed Hawaii Chapter of IAAO (International Association of Assessing Officials) on Kauai as a Charter Member and give an IDAM™ presentation. Kauai is another client of qPublic.net™ and they were so impressed with the presentation they also bought IDAM™ .

It seems to me that the most important thing is building great relationships – if that also happens to help build your business that’s just icing on the cake!
