GIS for Redistricting

by Andrew on February 10, 2014

What is “Gerrymander”? In simple terms it’s creating political jurisdiction boundaries in order to favor one person, party or interest. This term has been around since the early 1800s and unfortunately still happens today, but GIS can help. Did you know that Schneider Geospatial has completed a number of redistricting projects? Over the years our GIS professionals have worked with a number of communities and their districting needs. Each of those projects involved a number of people and groups. The one thing I’ve learned from those projects is that accurate mapping data results in faster “what if” answers and keeps the pressure off of the GIS manager. Also, did you know that Esri (the world leader in GIS Software) has a free “Districting for ArcGIS” add-on? This tool can be used to make redistricting much easier to draw district boundaries and to provide what-if scenarios.  Have you ever been involved with a redistricting project; and if so, do you have any lessons learned that you could share with the GIS community?
