Cost Savings with Mobile LiDAR

by Cindy on February 25, 2014

One of the key terms with mobile LiDAR is cost savings.  What does that really mean?  One answer is the data is all being collected at one time.  This allows for time savings in return trips to the field, clients can visit the project site from their computer or additional data can be extracted at a later date.

Another aspect to look at is what cost is being saved from good accurate data.  Take asbuilts for example, most asbuilts on projects are marked-up paper drawings, field sketches, field locations at certain key points, or verbal data transfer back to draftsman.  Say you pull the locations of the storm sewer manholes from the mobile data that is collected and use the asbuilt drawings to connect the underground features.  This will allow you to have a good location of the structure where it was built and a good measure on the pipe distance between the structures.  This data can be used in the future if structures and pipes need to be replaced and it will allow for a good estimate on how much material needs to be ordered.  Not only does this save on cost for ordering the right amount of materials it also saves time of going to the field doing measurements or re-ordering materials.

This is one of the many ways mobile LiDAR can be cost effective.
